ALCOVE SCHOOL

On April 4, 1892 a new school district was formed from part of the Rincon District. It was located 4 1/2 miles south of Kelseyville and about 1/8 mile west of Kelsey Creek. One of the people present made a remark the the area was "just a little alcove", and the new school district was named.
From 1893 until 1903 the school classes were held in a room of Judge W. Thompson's home. In 1903 a new school was built on the west side of the valley and west side of present Kelsey Creek Drive. This school continued until 1917, and the District was suspended in 1918-19 and consolidated with the Kelseyville District.
After the schoolhouse was abandoned, it was moved a few hundred yards nearer to the road; a couple of small additions were added; and it became a barn. Ella Stinson was the first teacher.

John Mahnke was the clerk of the Alcove schoolboard from the beginning until it was consolidated.
